Village schools given 'raw deal' by Labour

Figures show that rural schools currently receive significantly less cash than urban counterparts – despite the fact that results for the very poorest teenagers are often worse. Schools with 650 children receive an average of almost £400,000 less to spend on books, teachers and equipment, it was disclosed. Many Government grants aimed at boosting underperformance among pupils are only open to schools in major towns and cities. The figures, which were released following a Parliamentary Question by the Liberal Democrats, prompted claims that countryside schools were getting a “raw deal”. It follows continuing fears over the closure of rural primary schools because of cash shortages.
